Goshuinchō: “The book of Seals”

Book of Seals

Goshuinchō

Goshuinchō were originally meant to be carried by the deceased into their afterlife.

As a record of a person’s visits to shrines and temples, each referenced by distinctive stampings and calligraphy, the goshuincho was testament to your devotion – and, as such, your passport to a next life.

Today, the centuries-old tradition has evolved to include visitors using goshuincho as both record and memento of their stops on tours to Japan’s holy places.

Goshuinchō from Ibis is your pre-visit blessing for a memorable tour of shrines and temples in Japan.

Hand-made in Japan using traditional methods and materials, including high-quality washi papers most suitable for accepting ink from brushstrokes, our Goshuinchō are assembled in accordion-style bindings with handsome silk covers.

Goshuinchō – literally ‘book of seals’ – are blank books for recording the distinctive calligraphy and stampings offered by each of the holy places you visit on tour.
